Stress Management in the Workplace

In today’s competitive workplace, many people report that the majority of their overall stress comes from their jobs. Not their spouses, nor their children, nor even money – though these are certainly all related. Yes, most of their stress can be traced back to the job that they go to everyday, which is why stress management in the workplace is such a hot topic. So, when you’re trying to achieve positive stress management in the workplace, trying to live a more peaceful existence, what do you do?

The most obvious method of stress management in the workplace is to eliminate that stress altogether. But, most people cannot simply quit their jobs and camp out on a sandy beach everyday (as much as they might like to). Fortunately, there are methods for stress management in the workplace that work without quitting your job. Below are three great ways to implement stress management in the workplace, starting today.

Change the Things You Can

Take a long, hard look at your professional situation. What is causing you stress at work, in order from greatest to least amount of distress? When it comes to stress management in the workplace, most people cite an overload of work, difficult co-workers, demanding bosses, too little pay- the list goes on and on. But you need to remember one important thing.

The only thing you have complete control over in this life is yourself. Your actions, your reactions and your attitudes.

By adopting a positive attitude towards work and your part in it, you may end up indirectly changing some of the other stressors at work. If a co-worker snipes at you, simply smile and tell them you’re sorry they feel that way. If a boss gives you yet another assignment, don’t sigh or grimace. Say “thank you”, and tell them you’ll get it done as soon as your schedule allows. You’ll be happier, and those around you will start to see, and treat you, differently. Sometimes, stress management in the workplace is as simple as that.

Don’t Be Afraid to Designate

In your workplace, you probably know one or two people who seem to be able to do everything, with no effort or complaint. Co-workers and managers see this, and treat them accordingly, piling on assignment and stray jobs because they seem capable of doing everything. Now, stop for a moment. Are you one of those people, someone that everyone goes to when a job needs to be done – even if it’s not your job?

You may be afraid that turning down an assignment or asking for an extended deadline is a sign of weakness and will hurt your career. But, it won’t hurt your reputation nearly as much as a late or poorly executed assignment. Don’t be afraid to admit your workload is currently full, or that a requested job will require a bit more time than expected. If you have people working under you, don’t be afraid to designate.

Leave Your Work at Work

A big part of stress management in the workplace involves managing that same stress outside of the workplace. If you are someone who loves your job, who takes it personally, then you are likely to bring it home with you. Don’t do this! One of the most important parts of stress management in the workplace is, oddly enough, leaving it in the workplace. When you leave for the day, pretend there is an imaginary box on your desk. Leave your assignments, your client’s worries, your difficult boss and more, all in that boss as you walk out the door.

When you go home, take your whole self and all of your focus with you. Enjoy the time have away from work. You will enjoy your life more, and go back to your job more rested and better able to produce quality work for your employer.
