10 Tips for leading in a workplace without stress

I would like to invite each one of you to step up to the line and decide to be a leader in your field. Leadership is the ability to inspire those around you and bring out the best in them. You can do this by the inspiring quality of your work and relationships.

Here are a few points for your consideration and review.

  1. If you are a designated leader with a recognized title, don’t be afraid to make it clear to everyone that you are indeed the leader. Welcome the power that you have as a recognized leader and let people know that you feel really honored to be their leader. You can then use your power to boost the ego, energy, happiness and performance of those around you. Don’t waste the leadership opportunity.
  2. The best use of your title or position is to embellish it and use it to make others feel valued. Leadership is not about you. It is about them.
  3. Bury your ego. Do nothing for self- aggrandizement
  4. Step up to the line. Hold your head high. Accept your own greatness and but notice the greatness in others and behave with the greatness of others in mind. Be big enough, strong enough and noble enough to pay more attention to the feelings and happiness of others rather than your own. Your title can be a means of spreading joy in your team.
  5. Open your eyes and notice people. Behold and bless them. To bless means to make people feel happy and happiness is the prize in life.
  6. Be a THERE YOU ARE leader and not a HERE I AM LEADER. Attribute value to others. Use your title and your attitude to help others succeed.
  7. Ensure that each person is working in the area of his or her greatest love and competence. Actually ask, listen and comply. This is how you build a great organization.
  8. Have a health policy for your team and be a model of it. As much as you can, expose your team to healthy habits – healthy periods of rejuvenation, healthy foods, information about healthy eating, exercise and positive relationships.
  9. Do not leave the emotional tone of your team to chance. Don’t let happiness be a sometime thing, make it an all the time thing. Make each one feel excited to be a member of your team. Tell them how lucky you are to have their talent and support. Bring out the best in them by being the best that you can be to them.
  10. Emphasize happiness. Do something everyday to deliberately induce the emotion of happiness. As a leader you have the power to create stress and degrade the health of your team members. You can raise their blood pressure, weaken their immune system and decrease neurogenesis. You also have the power to raise the level of happiness and enhance the physiological function of your team. Decide which kind of leader you are and live it out everyday. You cannot be both.

The important note here is that you do not have to have a designated title or a position.  Decide to lead and go on and do it. The most effective kind of leadership is servant leadership.
