What’s in a new dress?

We have all heard it. We know it is true. We have even experienced its miraculous results from time to time, but in tough times when we need to use it, we find it hard to act it out.

What is it?

It is not what happens to you that matters but the attitude you choose to adopt when something happens to you”.

Why is it that we fail to adopt a positive attitude in the face of trouble when we know that a positive attitude is the best antidote to problems?

I am sure you have had many mornings when you wake up with energy and optimism, ready to conquer the world. You whistle on your way to work. You run to your desk with an extra spring in your step. Every email, every call and every conversation is uplifting – a wonderful day, everything is going your way.

At 11:55 am you are called immediately into the bosses office and, out of the blue, you are accused in the presence of others. They announce that you took some disks with very sensitive information on it from your boss’s office and you find yourself on the verge of being suspended, and with this, your whole world starts to crumble. You feel you were pushed off the mountain of elation into the valley of despair and desperation.

You are grumpy, unpleasant, impatient, and depressed. You know in your heart that it is not what happens to you. It is your attitude towards what happens to you, but somehow it seems irrelevant right now. All you can focus on is the audacity of these awful, incompetent people who are trying to destroy your reputation. With these thoughts anger, revenge, frustration and despair are knocking at your door.

You see evil never walks alone. It has friends like anger, fear, self-doubt and depression, and they vie for your attention and they talk convincingly to you, pleading with you to adopt them. They will prevent you from focusing on your goal. It is your response to their incessant beckoning that will determine if you are a true winner or not.

If you listen to the negative messages in your predicament, if you cater to the unfortunate circumstances and drink in the atmosphere of distress you will, by suppressing your best self, begin to talk, think and act more in line with the messages that are being sent to you from outside. And what is even more dangerous, you will begin to treat yourself that way and you will bring your appearance and your thinking in line.

When stressors strike reject the messages that they promote. Drive these impostors from your mind. Let the false beliefs fade away. But remember that nature hates a vacuum so begin immediately to fill your mind with the positive opposites – messages of confidence, high self regard and self enhancing belief that will bolster your performance as never before.

Remember that beautiful new dress you bought in Verona? The one that everybody likes which you’ve been saving for a special occasion? Now is the time to pull it out of the closet. Now is the time for you to let it prove its true worth.

So tomorrow morning, right in the midst of your disappointments, put on a brand new attitude of confidence and optimism. Embrace the fact that you are a wonderful, honest person with unique gifts and special talents.  Exercise a little bit more vigorously, act a little bit more vibrantly, think a little bit more positively, eat a little more appropriately to stimulate the best in you and pull out that new dress. Adorn it with a smile, and walk with a greater sense of power and purpose.

Put a special ring on your finger. Dress up your aura with happiness and love and look them in their inquiring eyes and they will know that you are innocent.

You see, it is not what happens to you but your response and attitude to what happens to you. That’s what a new dress can do for you.
